I first walked into a darkroom at the age of thirteen while taking a middle school shop class that included a six week period on photography. Two years later I had fully functional darkroom in my bedroom closet and began teaching myself the art and science of photographic developing and printing.
After finishing school and embarking on a spectacularly unsuccessful attempt a playing professional soccer in Europe, I returned to The United States and built my second darkroom in my live/work space in downtown Austin, Texas and resumed my pursuit of all things film, darkroom, and photography in general.
In 1996 I moved to New York City and built a studio and darkroom in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn. By the end of the 20th century photography as a whole was changing rapidly due to the digital revolution in both the creation of original images and the final expression of the printed photograph. A chance conversation in 2002 with the late Francesco Scavullo in which he stated "...film is dead" encouraged me to further pursue my "analog" based work in the darkroom and with the camera. I remained focused on film based mediums particularly the those of platinum/palladium and gelatin silver.
In 2010 I relocated to the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn and built a larger studio and darkroom to focus on my personal photographic projects. I returned to Austin, Texas in 2021 where it all began in that shop class more than forty years ago.
I built the Alchemy Editions Photographic Darkroom to continue my personal work as well as a space that provides custom film processing, black and white printing services, private darkroom rental by the hour or by monthly membership, and educational experiences from small group workshops to one on one training and is available to all artists from beginner to the most seasoned professional.
